Song History
A couple of years ago, I was over in Coventry at a reunion with a few of my old Uni friends,
talking about music and I mentioned I had bought a Sum 41 album. At this point, John
piped in about the explosion of
pop punk recently and everyone just sounds like they wanna be in GreenSpring 182. I thought great title, I'll
steal it.
In March 2005, the K-v-R website's monthly contest was
a free for all, so I thought I'd use this opportunity to write this song, since I always felt it would be a very short song. The
basic premise then, is that of a teenager who wants to start a punk band to release all the angst
and frustrations heaped upon him. They are fed up with not being understood and older people putting them down etc.
Thus the forming of a Greenday \ Offspring \ Blink 182 type band.
With a sort of looking back later and seeing, actually everyone goes through this and they are in no way special.
It was the same for me growing up in the late '80s. A lot of my mates, and I, were in thrash bands, which were in vogue at the time.
We thought we were cool but in hindsight we probably wasn't. It was the same with Grunge in the early '90s. Looking back now
a lot of it was rubbish, so nothing has really changed.
This isn't a dig at the youth of today, more of a celebration of the confusion of adolecence and the fact that wisdom does with age.
The music for this was thrown together over a weekend, in early March 2005 I stole some of the drums from a MIDI file of an Offspring
song, I got off the net, mixed in some drums from some Blink 182 and Green Day midi files then hacked in some other fills and things.
I believe the bass and rhythm guitars are mostly first takes. The solos are mish mashes of 3 takes, the 2nd solo, needing major rework, when
it was pointed out to me, it was the Baited Breath solo but with Wah... Ooops. The lyrics were written over the next two weeks. The final verse, (which I'm not totally happy with), was
written about 10 minutes before I recorded the vocals, which is 2 takes, one doubling the other. The song was mixed that same day. It probably needs a bit of reworking and possibly expanding at a later date.
You would not believe the amount of grief this song has caused me. Which is so funny.
Lyrics
Quit staring at me
I'll never be who ever you want me to be
I'll never be too old for rebellion
or have a bad attitude
Don't wanna sit at home
Don't wanna sit and be bored all alone
I just wanna have fun
Gonna start a punk band, release all this anger
I wanna be in Greenspring 182
I look like a rebel
but I haven't a clue
In years to come, I wonder what I was trying to prove.
Stop judging me
You don't know a thing about me
you don't know what this world has put me through
you'll never understand
Don't wanna be ignored
I have a right to be who I want to be
I just wanna be heard
Gonna start a punk band, kickstart the rebellion
I wanna be in Greenspring 182
I look like a rebel
but I haven't a clue
In years to come, I wonder what I was trying to prove.
I wanna be in Greenspring 182
I look like a rebel
but I haven't a clue
In years to come, I wonder who I was trying to fool.
